Staying Motivated to Walk Another Day

One of the best ways to stay motivated to walk is to include others. Ask family members, friends, and coworkers to join you. Join a walking group or club, or walk a dog every day. Here is a list of other tips you can try:

*Buy a pedometer! A pedometer counts how many steps you take. The first time you wear it, count how many steps you normally take in a day.

*Wear your pedometer every day and set a goal for increasing that number of steps each day . Try to start with an increase of 2,000 steps a day and work toward 10,000.

*Track you steps to see your progress. I use WalkerTracker.com (to your right)

*Get others to join you and set goals as a group.

*Fit a walk in wherever you can. Instead of watching TV or going out to eat, go out for a walk.

*If the weather is bad, take comfortable shoes to the mall and walk several laps inside.

*Walk to the grocery store, medical appointments, work, school, or shopping areas.

*Walk around your neighborhood or around a park.

*Schedule walks on your daily calendar. I call mine VIP meetings becuase that is what time spent on me with me is.

*Wear comfortable shoes and socks that cushion your feet.

*Drink plenty of water. Take a water bottle with you when you walk.

*Be safe and know your surroundings. Walk in a well-lighted, safe place. Carry a cell phone for emergencies.

*Plan family outings around walks together. Being physically active with kids sets an example they'll follow as they grow older.

*Set a goal to participate in an organized fitness walk.

The biggest one on this list for me is making sure my socks are thick enough. Somedays my little toes are a bit sore but I don't let that stop me from getting out there.

I hope these tips are helpful to you. Are you walking with me? Let me know in the comments.

Thanks for walking tips, Debo Hobo. Being the knucklehead that I can be, I never thought about the socks....

Hi Debo,
I saw that you are walking...what type of strength training are you doing?

I agree 100% about the socks. Thin socks kill my feet. Keep up the good work!

Debo Hobo, you forgot to mention that people should take the stairs instead of an elevator...

Hi Coop, I work with my trainer (sister in law) in the mornings at the gym. She runs me on the treadmill then we go in and do more aerobics then come the weights for upper body and legs as well.

Texas_Jam- I walk my share of stairs when they are there, but I am going to take the elevator before I even consider taking stairs. However taking the stairs is a good idea for someone that does not take the time to go to the gym or practice getting 10k steps per day. What is your daily excercise routine?

Hi Beth, yes, socks, socks, socks I bring an extra pair with me to work to put on instead of my trouser socks when I do my lunch time walk. I carry an extra pair in my purse as well right next to my emergency snack.

After all the feasting around December, I once again (five years from last time) met the limit, where its once again time to drop 10% of body weight.
I am going to see, how much I can lose simply by doing some small changes in daily diet (more vegatables, etc.) and more walking. If I select shortest routes, etc., my daily steps are around 3500-4000 steps/workday. Now that I skip couple subway stations, I can raise that limit to be something around 8000-10000 range.
During weekends, if weather is fine etc. I can pull something in 12000-16000 range and pull the weekly average to 10k/day.
Only downside is that all this walking takes its time, but thankfully I can look for things to photograph, etc. while I am walking.

I agree...walking can be the best exercise if you are hoping to increase your stagnant metabolism and lose weight. There is no reason you can't take a walk outside during the winter months...Just make sure you are dressed for the weather! Or if the cold weather is too much, head indoors to the Mall. NOTE: Walking in uncomfortable gear (poor socks and shoes)is the fastest way to end a walk! BEST news... walking moderately for an hour a day burns about 300 extra calories…a loss of 10 pounds in 6 months! Keep up the motivating posts!
